“On the iPhone I use an app called Unread. … If you ever use the Clear app for your to-dos or shopping lists where it’s very opinionated, very limited, and very gesture-based, it’s kind of like that for RSS readers. And I like that a lot on the phone. I have a lot of muscle memory there, and I enjoy the design of it quite a bit.”
— Marco Arment, Accidental Tech Podcast
“Unread carries a strong history as one of the top RSS clients on iOS, and version 2 ensures that will remain true for a long while yet.”
– Ryan Christoffel, MacStories
“Unread is focused on eliminating chrome — it is a pure reading app. It’s like reader mode all the time, and the assortment of color themes is nicely curated.”
– John Gruber, Daring Fireball
---
Unread has full VoiceOver coverage. Every screen and every feature is available to users with vision impairments:
• From any screen you can perform a magic tap, a two-finger double tap, to open a menu of options available for that screen.
• When on an article list, there are actions available for each article in the list. After selecting an article, invoke the accessibility rotor and then select “Actions”. There is an action to mark the article read or unread, an action to share the article, and many others.
• Use the VoiceOver escape gesture, a two-finger “Z”, to back out of the current screen.

Version 3.6.1
The most recent feature update added these improvements to Article Actions:
Copy Article Link and View on Web are no longer considered premium article actions. Both are available with or without a subscription. They are still optional and off by default. To enable them, open Settings and then open its Articles screen. These actions are always available via hardware keyboard shortcut on iPad.
The Article Actions settings screen now divides actions into two categories: Save Article Actions for bookmarking and read later services, and Share Article Actions for those pertaining to email or Messages.
Article actions in context menus and swipe left menus are now sorted differently: first by category and then by name.
This update fixes a crash that would occur when subscribing to feeds under some circumstances.

Version 3.5
Unread 3.5 adds these improvements:
• This update adds significant performance improvements to Unread’s feed discovery algorithm and changes to the Subscription information screen. Details below.
• This update adds performance improvements around refreshing Unread Cloud and Local accounts.
• Mark All Read is now available in the swipe left menu of an article list showing search results. This change is not available in Fever accounts.
• This update fixes a bug that prevented the app from rotating while zoomed in on an image.
• The list of starred articles in Inoreader accounts is now referred to as “Read Later”, matching Inoreader’s nomenclature.
• Unread now more aggressively tries resubmitting articles to Raindrop.io after failures.
• When removing an account from a device, Unread now uses the phrase “Delete Account” and a trash can icon for deleting a local account. It uses the phrase “Remove Account” and a lock icon for deleting other accounts of other types. When removing an Unread Cloud account, you are given the option of simply removing the Unread Cloud account from the device or destroying the account.
• With this update articles from Facebook via Inoreader’s Facebook integration have no title.
• This update fixes bugs around the display of ads from free Inoreader accounts.
• This update fixes a bug that caused refresh problems with Unread Cloud and Local accounts after significant system clock fluctuation.
• This update fixes a bug that could cause issues syncing read/unread article status changes with a Feedly account under some circumstances.
Feed Discovery, Subscription Screen Changes
In prior versions of Unread, retrieving a list of feeds for a specific webpage could be slow under some circumstances. Unread would attempt to determine before even presenting the list of feeds whether each feed was summary-only or had full article content, and therefore what the default webpage text settings should be. With this update Unread does not attempt to determine this until refreshing the account after subscribing to the feed. This makes the process of subscribing to a feed from either the app or the Subscribe in Unread share sheet extension faster.
Since the best default webpage text settings are not yet known at the time you subscribe to a feed, the webpage text options are no longer part of the Subscription screen in the app. They are set automatically in the background. As in prior versions, when switching from Feed Text to Webpage Text or vice-versa for an article there is an option to apply that change to all articles from that feed.

Aug 22, 2022 Version 3.1
Unread 3.1 adds “Subscribe in Unread”, a share sheet extension letting you easily subscribe to feeds offered by the website you are visiting. This update also adds webpage text feature improvements and more.
New Share Sheet Extension: Subscribe in Unread
From Safari or any other web browser, open the share sheet and select Subscribe in Unread. The extension will present a list of feeds offered by the website you are visiting. Subscribe to any feed. You can set a custom title, assign groupings (folders, smart streams, or tags — whatever groupings your account supports), and even create new groupings. If you are already subscribed you can edit the subscription or unsubscribe.
The Subscribe in Unread extension incorporates Unread’s beautiful typography, context menus, color themes, and great hardware keyboard support.
The Subscribe in Unread extension does not support subscribing to feeds from Fever API accounts because the Fever API does not support subscription management.
Webpage Text Feature Improvements
The swipe left menu of an article now contains a Display item. After selecting that, you are given the option of Feed Text, Webpage Text, or Feed & Webpage Text. The option representing the currently displayed content is highlighted. Pressing command-shift-t on a hardware keyboard while viewing an article also displays the menu letting you choose Feed Text, Webpage Text, or Feed & Webpage Text.
Unread now refers to articles consisting of a link to and comment on another article, such as those from Daring Fireball, as “link articles” instead of “linked list articles”.
Other Improvements
• This update adds feed discovery improvements around feeds from YouTube and from Medium.
• Pressing command-l or command-f from the Add Subscription screen now puts focus on the “Website or Feed URL” text field.
• Selecting a feed to which you are already subscribed from the Add Subscription screen now presents the screen letting you edit the subscription. Long press any feed for a context menu letting you view the website, copy the feed link, or unsubscribe.
• This update adds the ability to export a list of unavailable feeds in your Unread Cloud account or Local account to a JSON file. To access this functionality, navigate to the Feed Errors screen, swipe left, and select Export Feed Errors from the resulting menu.
• The Unread Cloud sign-in screen now shows a header of “Unread Cloud” instead of “Unread: An RSS Reader”.
• This update adds modest improvements to the heuristics around determining whether an article is a link article.

• This update fixes a bug that prevented the feed title from appearing in the article view under some circumstances.
• This update fixes bugs around saving the webpage text vs. feed text setting for an individual article when it varies from the setting for its feed.
• The General font size setting now has text indicating that it is a legacy option. I intend to remove this setting when I can require iOS 15 or iPadOS 15. iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 let one specify system type sizes for individual apps, making the General font size setting redundant. The Article Lists and Article View type size settings will remain.

Aug 10, 2021 Version 2.7.1
I recently released an update with improvements around the experience of reading linked list articles.
This update adds these improvements:
• When invoked on Hacker News linked list articles, the share sheet and article actions now use the linked article URL instead of the Hacker News URL.
• This update fixes a bug that would prevent Unread from showing webpage text for articles from Google Alert feeds.
• This update fixes a bug that could cause Unread to crash when refreshing in the background.
version 2.7
posted on 2021-08-03
Aug 3, 2021 Version 2.7
Unread 2.7 adds improved handling of linked list articles and a variety of other improvements.
* Improved Handling of Linked List Articles *
This update focuses on improving the reading experience around linked list articles. A linked list article is an article consisting of a link to another article and a quote from or comment on that article. Linked list articles are often found on Daring Fireball, The Loop, MacStories, Pixel Envy, Six Colors, and TidBITS.
Each subscription now has three different webpage text setting values that can be applied to traditional articles and to linked list articles:
• Feed Text
• Webpage Text
• Both (Feed Text and Webpage Text)
When showing both, Unread will show the article content from the feed and the content from the linked article. When showing just feed text or webpage text for a linked list article, the swipe left menu will include a Feed & Webpage Text option.
Most articles from Hacker News are linked list articles. When Unread shows both feed and webpage text for a Hacker News article, you will see a link to the Hacker News comments page and the full article on one screen.
This update also incorporates these improvements around linked list articles:
• For new subscriptions and on new installations of Unread, Unread will now default to showing both feed and webpage text for linked list articles from some feeds.
• This update improves Unread’s heuristics around determining what articles are linked list articles. It also adds heuristics around determining the URLs of the original article and the linked article when not explicitly specified by the feed or relayed by the feed syncing service.
• When Unread can determine both the original article URL and the linked article URL, Unread will always use the URL of the original article for the share sheet and for article actions such as Instapaper. For example, when Unread determines that it is displaying a Daring Fireball article that links to another article, it will use the daringfireball.net URL for the share sheet and for article actions.
• When showing both feed and webpage text for an article, the Mail Article action now incorporates both feed and webpage text into the outgoing message.
• Unread will now remove images added to the feed text of Hacker News articles that are added by Inoreader. Such images will still be considered possible article list thumbnails.
* Other Improvements *
• Context menus for individual subscriptions and folders now include a Mark All Read item. You can use that to mark all articles for that subscription or folder read without opening the article list. This menu item is not available when syncing with a Fever account.
• This update incorporates improvements around finding article list thumbnails.
• Table cells in webpage text now have borders.
• Context menu items for subscriptions and folders are now available as accessibility rotor actions.
• This update adds minor improvements around the display of smaller images in articles.
• This update fixes a bug that could cause a crash when attempting to save a broken image to the photo library.

• This update adds VoiceOver improvements to the tutorial and adds a VoiceOver document to Technical Notes.
• This update adds modest improvements to the algorithm that determines the best article list images for articles, and fixes some bugs around images with URLs that cannot be parsed.

• This update fixes a bug that prevented the Priority Sources setting on medium and large Unread Counts widgets from working as expected under some circumstances.
version 2.5
posted on 2021-02-11
Feb 11, 2021 Version 2.5
Unread 2.5 expands Unread’s free tier and more.
*** Expanded Free Tier ***
This update removes the reading limits that were in place before purchasing a subscription. Adjusting some settings on home screen widgets now requires purchasing a subscription:
* You now need a subscription to configure a Recent Articles widget to show articles from a specific feed or folder.
* You now need a subscription to configure a medium or large Unread Counts widget to show unread counts by folder, or to show unread counts in a specific folder by feed.
* You now need a subscription to configure a small Unread Count widget to show the count for a specific feed or folder.
Article actions such as Instapaper and Mail Link now require a subscription. If you enabled article actions in a prior version of Unread but have not purchased a subscription, those article actions will continue to work without a subscription until the next feature update.
There is no longer an optional Article Actions menu item in the swipe left menu of an article. Article Actions are setup from the Settings screen.
Settings that require a subscription are marked as such on the Settings screen before a subscription is purchased.
*** Default Email App Support ***
If Apple Mail is not configured with any accounts and iOS is configured to use an alternative email app as the default, Mail Link will use that alternative email app.
The Mail Article action still requires Apple Mail. There is no way to send rich text to an alternative email app. The Article Actions settings screen no longer lets you enable Mail Article if Apple Mail is not setup with an account.
*** Additional improvements ***
* Unread now renders iframe elements from most feeds. This change will not apply to articles already downloaded to the device before installing this update.
* This update improves the formatting of tweets quoted in articles from Substack feeds. This change will not apply to articles already downloaded to the device before installing this update.
* This update fixes compatibility issues with the Display Zoom accessibility setting.
* This update improves haptic feedback around Unread context menus for links and images in articles.
* This update fixes a bug that prevented the ordering and grouping settings from working on lists of articles from Feed Wrangler Smart Streams, Feedbin Saved Searches, and Inoreader Active Searches under some circumstances.
* This update fixes bugs that prevented Unread from working well with mice that have scroll wheels.
* This update adds fixes for some formatting issues that affected MacRumors articles. This change will not apply to articles already downloaded to the device before installing this update.
* This update improves the algorithm for finding article list thumbnails for articles with YouTube videos.
* This update adds performance improvements around drawing images in article lists.
* The About screen and the Unread Subscription screen have been reorganized.
* Since iOS 14 lets you choose a default system browser other than Safari, I removed the Chrome and Firefox options from the Open Links In setting. I also removed the Open in Chrome and Open in Firefox share sheet actions.
* Long pressing to show an Unread context menu now requires long pressing for a slightly longer period of time. This should avoid Unread context menus appearing when not expected.
* Unread now consistently ignores articles (“a”, “an”, “the”) at the start of a subscription title when sorting those subscriptions.
* Unread can now be launched with a feed: URL. Unread will respond by letting you subscribe to the feed specified by that URL. If you have other apps on your device that can be opened with feed: URLs, iOS might open Unread or it might open one of the other apps.
Unread 2.5 requires iOS 14 or later.

Dec 1, 2020 Version 2.4
This update adds a variety improvements, including:
• Widget improvements
• An option to use the Unread 1.x context menu
• Layout adjustments
• Messages Article Action
Widget Improvements
The Recent Articles widgets now allow you to limit articles to those from a specific subscription or folder. There is now a header at the top of the medium and large widget that describes the source: the name of the subscription or folder, a label for the account if you have multiple accounts, or just “Recent Articles”. The unread count is also now part of the header.
The medium and large Unread Counts widget now allows you to show unread counts by subscription in a specific folder. The total unread count is now included in the header. Tapping the header brings you to either the account screen or to the count of unread articles by subscription for the configured folder.
New Context Menu Option
This update adds a new setting to use Unread’s custom menus — like the menu that appears when you swipe the screen to the left — as context menus that appear when you long press an item. In Unread 2.0 I adopted system context menus that were introduced in iOS 13. When you long press an item, you typically get a system context menu and a preview window.
I still believe it is important to offer the system context menus along with previews of items such as links in an article or articles in an article list. But since releasing Unread 2.0 I have come to the conclusion that for many customers the system context menus are a step back from Unread’s custom menus. They more often require scrolling. Their menu items have much smaller tap targets. They are slower to appear on the screen.
If you wish to use Unread’s menus for long press actions, you can do so with this update. Just open Settings, scroll down to Interface, select Context Menus, and then select Unread. The Unread setting will be the default for new installations. For existing installations updating to this version, the default will be System.
Please be aware that previewing links and drag and drop actions are only available with System context menus.
Layout Adjustments
Unread now uses much narrower margins on the iPhone. On the iPad, its margins are generally narrower but they adjust based on the font size. Customers on iPads with larger font size settings will see narrower margins.
Messages Article Action
This update adds a Messages article action. After enabling it under Settings → Article Actions, you can quickly send an article via Messages from the swipe left menu of an article. You can also use the control-i keyboard shortcut.
Additional details about this update are available on the Golden Hill Software blog. If you are happy about this update, please consider leaving a review, writing about it on your blog, or posting about it to social media.

Unread 2.3 adds these home screen widgets on iOS 14:
• Recent Articles
• Single Unread Count
• Unread Counts
---
Recent Articles Widget
The Recent Articles widget shows recent articles at a glance. Tap on an article to open it in Unread. This widget is available in all three widget sizes: small, medium, and large. The small variant will show a single article. The medium variant will show one or two articles. The large variant will show a list of articles.
Single Unread Count Widget
The Single Unread Count widget is a small widget that shows the number of unread articles. By default it shows the number of unread articles in your account. You can customize this to show the number of unread articles for a subscription or for a folder.
Unread Counts Widget
The Unread Counts widget has medium and large variants that show the number of unread articles either by subscription or by folder. Since the full list of subscriptions or folders with unread articles will not always fit inside a widget, a Priority Sources setting lets you specify which subscriptions or folders you most want to see in the widget if they have unread articles.
---
Opening Links and Articles in Web Browsers
iOS 14 lets you have a default web browser other than Safari. On devices running iOS 14, the Safari option of the Open Links In setting has been renamed to Web Browser. The Open in Safari share sheet action has been renamed to Open in Web Browser.
I intend to remove the Chrome and Firefox options of the Open Links In setting when I can reasonably require iOS 14. I also intend to remove the Open in Chrome and Open in Safari share sheet actions at that time. Please let me know if my doing so would interfere with your workflow.
---
Other Improvements
• Show Read Items or Hide Read Items is now available in the swipe left menu of article lists for subscriptions and folders.
• Articles with iframe content such as YouTube videos now loads more smoothly.
• This update reduces vertical spacing around some images.
• This update fixes a bug that could cause tapping an image to either do nothing or to open an underlying link rather than showing the image full screen under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a bug for Feedly customers where, under some circumstances, marking a large number of articles read and then refreshing the account would cause a subset of those articles to appear unread again.
• Unread will now mark an article read in your feed service account when leaving the app if that article is open.
• When the Black theme is active, there are now very light separators delimiting the top and bottom bars of the screen.
• When emailing an article via the Mail Article action, the initial message now includes a blank line at the top. This makes it easier to insert comments with a regular (non-header) text size before sending.
• This update fixes a bug that caused duplicate images in some xkcd articles.
• This update adds formatting improvements for macrumors.com articles with videos.
• This update fixes a bug that prevented Unread from discovering feeds for homekitauthority.com.
• This update fixes a bug that caused images from some postsecret.com articles to be cut off.
• This update fixes a bug that caused previewing a link in an article and then tapping through to in-app Safari to fail under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a bug that could cause particularly long presses on folder rows that result in opening subscription lists to also open article lists (or vice-versa) under some circumstances.

version 2.2
posted on 2020-07-16
Jul 16, 2020 Version 2.2
New Article Actions:
• Mail Article mails the content of the article.
• Mail Article Link mails a link to the article.
• Pinboard saves a bookmark to an article in your Pinboard account.
• Raindrop.io saves a bookmark to an article in your Raindrop.io account.
Each article action can be invoked by keyboard shortcut: option-i for Mail Article, command-i for Mail Article Link, command-shift-b for Pinboard, and command-shift-r for Raindrop.io.
Keyboard Navigation Improvements:
When navigating up and down an article list via hardware keyboard with space or shift-space, Unread now stops at breaks between articles when possible rather than scrolling a fixed number of points up and down the screen. This change also applies to other screens with lists of items.
Important Note:
For Feedly customers, the list of Saved Articles is now called “Read Later”. The wording around adding and removing articles to this list has also been updated. The underlying functionality is unchanged, but I updated the wording to reflect a change in Feedly’s nomenclature.
Minor Improvements:
• Most animations now happen about 30% faster.
• This update adds improved formatting of aside elements.
• Overscrolling in order to scroll to the next article, scroll to the previous article, mark all read, or pull to refresh is now easier with a trackpad or mouse.
• Unread now plays video in embedded iframes from player.twitch.tv.
• Unread now uses a Content Security Policy as an additional mechanism to ensure that articles cannot execute arbitrary scripts.
• Unread will now consider a feed private if its URL path contains the string “/private/” or the string “/pri/”, or if its URL contains the query parameter “unread_private=true”. Private feeds have webpage text turned off by default. URLs of private feeds are never sent to the Unread Web Service.
• The context menu for a subscription row now includes a Copy Feed Link menu item.
• Report Webpage Text Issue in the share sheet has been replaced with Report Article Issue. That option is available regardless of whether you are viewing feed text or webpage text. Instead of sending a request to the Unread Web Service, it creates an email that you can send to the customer support address. The privacy policy has been updated to reflect that the Unread Web Service is no longer involved in reporting these issues.
• Retrieving articles is now significantly faster.
• Unread now uses better article list images for articles from underconsideration.com under some circumstances.
Bug Fixes
• Performing actions from context menus is now smoother.
• Article previews now display more smoothly.
• This update fixes bugs around and improves the performance of loading subsequent pages of articles after scrolling to the end of an article list.
• This update fixes some article list and article display glitches.
• This update fixes a bug that caused the scroll position on an article to change under some circumstances after closing and reopening Unread.
• This update fixes some bugs around syncing article status.
• This update fixes a bug that caused the left arrow key on a hardware keyboard to behave in unexpected ways when the focus is on a text field.
• This update fixes a crash that could occur under some circumstances when searching for a feed by URL.
• This update fixes a bug where, under some circumstances, tapping a link to a website could bring the user to the website’s feed instead of the website’s home page.
• This update fixes a bug where, under some circumstances, swiping back did not work while refreshing an account.
• This update fixes a bug that would prevent a videos from having a play control under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a bug that would cause article lists for NewsBlur folders to exclude articles that exist in subfolders.
• Unread now better handles articles that do not have webpage URLs.
This update requires version 13.5 or later of iOS or iPadOS.
